The Parable of How To Boil A Frog

March 2nd, 2009

A Thorough Examination of Modern Christendom

All Scripture Quotations Used In This Article are from the Authorized King James Version of the Holy Bible, Without Exception

Now, that main title might sound like this article will be a step by step procedure in a redneck culinary cookbook on the proper way to prepare the Southern delicacy of frog legs. Personally, I really enjoy fried frog legs and though I don’t do it any more, I have done my share of frog gigging and enjoy the tender fried delicacy that only a true Son of the South would understand.  Now, that’s not an anti Yankee term, it’s just that I don’t think they have nearly as many frogs, say in Wisconsin or Michigan as they do in Alabama, Georgia, and especially Florida.

But, dear hearts, this article actually has absolutely nothing to do with the green skinned, slimy creature of the Southern waters.  No, actually it is an article that I truly hope will stir the hearts of millions of Americans and people worldwide, about how the Church has drifted so far from God and so alike the world it has become.  There it is in a nutshell, but how did we get there.  First, back to the frog boiling.

It is said that if you throw a live, active, healthy frog into boiling hot water, he will hop out and be gone so fast that the burns would hardly cause him any permanent damage.  I don’t know.  But, here’s the theory behind the subtle way to boil a frog.

First, you get a big pot of water, filled to within about 3 inches from the top with very tepid water.  Then, you gently place the frog into the comfortable pool (the boiling pot that isn’t boiling yet).  It feels good; it’s so clean and clear, how could any self respecting frog think anything other than he had just been placed in the most comfortable and wonderful place he could possibly be?  Then, as the frog happily swims around in the deep pot, being able to clearly see over the top, and think that if any emergency happened, one big swish of those long webbed feet and he could easily be gone to safety.  So, he feels no alarm at all, but in actuality he’s already in trouble and mortal danger is just a little further away.

Next, the keeper of the pot, the one with the frog as a victim, slowly…ever so slowly turns the heat up under the pot.  He turns it up little by little, bit by bit, until the water gets past tepid, lukewarm is already in the rearview mirror, so to speak, and the frog has little noticed that the water is getting warmer and warmer, and headed quickly to hot, boiling hot, dangerous hot, frog cooking hot.  Poor Mr. Frog doesn’t recognize that he is past being in trouble, but here’s the problem.

As the controller of the heat of the pot was patient, he let Mr. Frog get used to each little increment.  You see, patients is his most dangerous yet subtle ploy to accomplish his ends.  So, he patiently turns the heat up ever so slightly, and Mr. Frog keeps swimming around until he gets used to the increased temperature.  Then the heat is raised just a little bit more and he patiently waits and watches the frog keep swimming around in the hotter water until he’s convinced that Mr. Frog is totally adjusted to his new environment.  Once more the temperature is brought up ever so slightly so as not to alarm Mr. Frog, who is already deeply in hot water.

And, just when the water begins to boil, Mr. Frog finally realizes that he has gone too far in his enjoyment of the pool that went from tepid to boiling without his notice.  All because of that unseen hand that kept slowly, and patiently turning up the heat until now, when Mr. Frog lacks the strength to jump out.  He knows he’s in trouble; serious and mortal trouble, but he just can’t resist any longer because he allowed himself to become lulled by comfort or pleasure.  He played when he should not have stayed, and now he’s too weak to resist.  Alas, poor Mr. Frog is now dead, prepared to perfection, and lying on the plate of that unseen hand, ready to be consumed.  Poor Mr. Frog, the poet said, splashed and played until he was dead.

Now, I go back to my story.  The truth is, this article has absolutely nothing to do with cooking frogs, but is meant to point out how that we can get ourselves into deep trouble just like Mr. Frog, if we lose our good sense and begin to play in places, and with things and people that we should not be keeping company with.  When you have let your guard down on what you know is right, and moral, and good for you in the long run.  When you let your guard down on things like how the pleasurable, fun, exciting, or enjoyable things can look quite innocent in and of themselves, you then want to go to the next step.

That principle works whether we’re talking about young people being beguiled into sexual sin because of peer pressure, or if you’re talking about someone who enjoyed the beer or the marijuana cigarette so much that they really don’t see the harm in taking the next step to liquor or cocaine, or stronger things.  So, what I’m saying is simply this, even though you start off on the little things, the seemingly harmless things, the innocent enough things, you graduate to the lowest, most depraved levels in your life that you ever expected you would.  You keep going from step to step until one day you look into the mirror and the person you see is not who you were; not who you thought you were; and certainly not who you want to be.  But you, little frog, have stayed too long and now you’re just another victim of Satan’s plate.

He was patient.  He knew just what goodies to dangle before your face.  He knew just what it took to steal you, body and soul.  You see, he might have acted friendly when he was making your water comfortable, but the truth is, he was stealing your soul.  He was stealing your life; he was stealing you as a person and destroying you in the process.

The Bible says in the book of John, chapter 10, verse 10 that, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”   (Underlining mine)

Now, let’s bring the good, religious, Church going folks into this same frog boiling scenario.  What!  Do you mean, Jim, that good Christian folks can get caught up in the same trap as that worldly, Christ hating crowd?  Yes dear hearts, I mean there is no office or officer of any Church that is “frog boiling” proof, except the truly redeemed, born from above, called out, Spirit filled, God honoring Child of God, and they are tempted also.  I mean preachers, Sunday School teachers, music ministers, Church secretaries, deacons, members; they all are susceptible, unless they are Spirit filled and walking with the Lord.  Both those terms are misapplied and misused, but we’ll deal with them, and much more later in this article.  Hold on now, this gets even better.

But the Bible clearly teaches the Christian to keep his body clean from the fleshly lusts of the world.  You see, we Christians are humans too and if you take a careful survey of those who name the name of Christ today, you’ll find millions of them that are living contrary to Biblical standards.  Why?  What has happened to the modern day Church?

You can take a drive around America and you will find more houses of worship scattered across the land than you thought even existed.  There are millions of them.  Many of them today are small little country Churches that got so small in attendants, they were forced to shut the doors permanently and seek another place to worship.

But the question that is really bothering me is, why are these Churches getting so small in attendants?  Where are they going when they leave?  Are they going to another Church?  Are they having to relocate because of their job or some other natural cause?  Or, are they leaving and not going to Church anywhere anymore?  Oh, friend of mine, the world is full of the latter.  Why are the little Churches getting smaller and closing their doors for the last time and at the same time we see all over America, mega Churches, the size of which boggles the mind?  Well dear hearts, I’m so glad you asked that question, because it launches us right into the heart of what is going on with “real Spirituality” in America.

What do I mean by “real Spirituality”?  Well, first I would like you to notice I capitalized the word Spirituality because I am speaking about that part of the Godhead that we call The Holy Spirit, or The Spirit of God, Who by the way, dwells within the true Christian.  Here’s the heart of the whole matter; how many people who call themselves Christians are truly, real Christians?  Right about here is where most people would say, “judge not lest ye be judged”, and that is what the Scripture says.  You can’t tell by what a person says or does.  So, if you can’t tell by what they say or do, how can you tell the real Spirit filled Christian?  Well, the simple, short answer that Jesus gave us is “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”  (Matthew 7:20-21)  I don’t know about you but I think we ought to find out what that will of the Father is.

So, what is Jesus saying to us about telling the difference?  All through the parables Jesus teaches many comparisons.  The wheat and the tares, the good fishes and the bad fishes, the sheep and the goats, just to name a few.  But, He is telling us not to judge, but to inspect the fruit of a suspected true Christian.  In other words, what that means is to observe their lives and lifestyles and see if they measure up to the Holy Bible and it’s teachings.

But, I go to a good Church where they get real spiritual.  We have a drama team who really gives stirring, moving plays that bring many people to making a decision for Christ.  We have a dynamic music group that really gets everybody up on their feet and clapping and waving their hands in worship.  But the best thing is, our Minister’s sermons always make me feel good about myself.  I always leave feeling like I am truly loved and that someone cares about me.  I really like my Minister and I like my church.

You see dear hearts, this land is full of worship houses where there is NO true worship, there is NO true Spirituality, and most importantly there is NO real Holy Spirit filled preaching that would cause a person to come under Holy Ghost conviction.  But there is a big push towards moving people with emotion and tears and hugging and even so-called speaking in tongues.  All those things appeal to the flesh and emotions and you sit and hear a message that teaches you to “name it and claim it” because you are a child of God.  Well, let’s check into some of these things.

Now, here’s where I want to speak to your heart and try to set you on a straight course concerning true Christianity and The True Church.  You remember that I just mentioned these mega churches, and many smaller but doctrinally similar churches, filled with people and everybody is busy “doing” all manner of things in order to be a part of the team.  Even much smaller community churches that might not be as big physically, but their doctrine, or should I say their modus operandi is the same as the mega churches.   You may think you’re winning souls to Christ, when in reality you’re signing up more people into the local church and engaging them into worldly and even Satanic activities.

May I insert this thought here please?  There are countless buildings that call themselves churches that are just not Biblically sound in doctrine and deed to even be called a Church.  Go to the Book of The Revelations in the Bible (KJV preferred) and read chapter 3, verses 14 through 19 and you will see what Jesus Christ, the Son of The Living God has to say about these last days churches and their members.  It is strong but sound advice for the soul that is teetering on the brink of eternal punishment.  Let’s read what Jesus said:   Rev. 3:14 – 3:19 “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou were cold or hot.  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent.”

What is He talking about in this scripture.  Well, sadly I think He’s talking to people in big, rich houses of so-called worship which are getting richer and richer but they aren’t pleasing the Savior with their numbers.  You know, it’s always been strange to me that people decide which church to attend by how big it is or how many people go there, or maybe a certain wealth of the members.  What in the world has any of that got to do with being a Christian?  Nothing, and that’s exactly what our Lord is saying so clearly.

He first says, “I know your works; they are neither hot nor cold, just lukewarm. (Sounds like a frog-happy situation to me).  Then He says because you’re just a lukewarm person, He will spue you out of his mouth…that means He will vomit you out because your whole profession and actions are revolting to the Head of the True Church.

Then he says, “you say” you are rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing.  Thinking themselves to be very rich, and needing nothing else in their life, they are satisfied with themselves.  But, further in the verse he tells you that you are poor.  So, it seems to me that we here on earth build big churches and fill them with people, but never truly come to know Christ as Personal Savior.  That being the case, you are NOT a Christian, but you very well may be a nice person; you may attend service regularly; you may be sincere in what you’re doing, and you may be trusting Jesus as your Lord, without ever having had a spiritual birth. You’re just a religious person and you’re comfortable in your poor, lukewarm situation.

He also says that you are wretched, and miserable, and naked.  Wow!  What a description of you if you think you’re in good  standing with the Lord, and you are totally opposite from where you think you are concerning your eternal salvation.  And, it is revealed to you too that you are wretched and miserable.  That’s a person who has no real joy down deep in their soul.  You may be seated in the biggest church in America, but feel like you’re in a lonely room by yourself.  Have you ever been lonely in a crowd.  That is your empty soul telling you that you need Jesus.  Be filled with the Spirit and you will find peace, joy, love, and be rich in the Love of Christ.

Then the Lord Jesus mentions that you ,being naked, would be given white raiment so that you would be clothed and that the shame of thy nakedness be not seen.  It has, ever since God sewed together skins to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve, been a shame not to cover your nakedness.  This includes the way you dress.  You can be clothed and still be showing your nakedness.  Just look around and it’s everywhere.  Sick, sick people walking our streets, so far from God they would rather kill you than hear you tell them about Jesus Christ the Lord.

You are to be clothed with white raiment.  That means you should be covered with pure  righteousness, not naked shame.  Doesn’t even nature itself teach you that it is a shame to show your nakedness?   But, Satan and his demons are invading and possessing the masses today to the point that their morality and their minds are so demonic that they crave the opportunity to show their nakedness.  Any time you see a person streaking or wanting to flaunt their totally nude body, these are  people that are possibly filled with Satanic spirits.  If that is true, we’ve got plenty of people, men and women, boys and girls, that need to get back to the Bible.  The Bible says in Jeremiah 6:16, “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.  But they said, we will not walk therein.”  You see my friend, even with the instruction and admonition of God Himself, they brazenly stand up and say, “we will not walk therein.”  They are God haters and will not come to Him that they might have life.

I know some of you younger folks will think that I am ancient.  I graduated from high school in 1966.  There were NO boys with long hair, NO ear rings, NO tattoos, NO body piercing and their pants waistline was NOT half way down to their knees, and there were NO senior cruise ship excursions.  My wife and were discussing what the girls wore to school, and everywhere for that fact.  I told her that in 12 years of going to school, I NEVER saw a teacher or student wearing pants; they ALL wore dresses.  That, my little frog, is how much the heat of the water has been turned up in 43 years.  Look how much has happened in just a mere 43 years in America.  We’re in spiritual trouble my friends and we’d better get back to God’s Word and instead of asking him what to wear, ask Him what He wants us to do.  He’ll guide you if you’re sincere.  This is not the time to play church, or put up a religious front, or just ignore the LORD.  We had all better seek Him while He may be found.

While speaking of being rich, He counsels you to buy of Him gold tried in the fire.  Now, what does that mean?  When gold is placed in the smelting pot what happens?  Well, it is put to the fire hot enough to break it down.  Next, the fire is heated even more until the gold has no form on its own and has to be held by the refiners cup.  Then, something remarkable happens to the gold.  Before, it just looked like raw gold, but now the impurities (sins) that were hidden in the gold begin to rise to the top so the refiner can skim off the dross of the gold and what is left, dear hearts, is pure gold, tried in the fire.  It is poured into a mold and allowed to cool and take the shape of the mold.  That mold looks just like Jesus!  And you are about to become one of His and look just like your Personal Savior.  That’s what a finalized, heaven ready Christian looks like.

What I’m saying is that when you are truly saved, you are broken down by the fire of the Holy Spirit of God until you are no longer your own, but you are putting yourself into His capable hands.  Then, by faith you say to Him, take me Lord break my stubborn will, and make me Your own.   Forgive me of my sin and mold me and make me what You would have me to be.  There’s no holding back.  And the wording must come from your heart, not this article.

You see, the process begins with you receiving the preached Word of God into your heart.  (A note here; many churches are no longer preaching The Word of God, but are substituting all manner of programs. Look in the next paragraph at what Paul said.)  That heart that receives the Word begins to turn that Word over and over in the soul until you come to the place where you feel like if you don’t get to Jesus, you’ll perish.  That’s the drawing power of the Father that Jesus speaks of in John 6:44 and says, “No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.”   He uses the Holy Spirit to convict you of your sin and draw you to Christ the Savior for repentance.

The Apostle Paul says in Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”  And when the Word of God has been received in the soul, then comes the quickening of the soul.  That means that soul has been made alive to God.  Then, having been quickened, or made alive, you then come under the conviction of your sins.  Those steps in God’s process of salvation are almost simultaneous. That’s the reason there is no conviction of sin in the hearts of millions of modern day church goers today.  There is no preaching of the Word, and there is no reading of the Word.  Churches are substituting true Spirit filled, God sent preaching for plays, programs, different things of the organization of their church.  May I remind you that the True Church is not an organization but an organism.  We are His living body.

Now I consider that the Authorized Version, known as the King James version is the version sanctioned by the Lord Himself for us today.  All others are false copies of the True Word for the English speaking world….I don’t care what your preacher says.  Ask him how many souls have been saved by preaching from the Authorized Version versus all the others put together.  He’ll have to admit that there have been more people truly saved because of the true Bible, the King James Version than all the others put together.

Now, when I say saved, I do not mean “made a decision for Christ”, or  “accepted Christ”, or “walked the isle”, or “went down front”, or any other such wording not in the Bible.  None of those that I underlined were done by the process I mentioned above.   It takes true Holy Spirit conviction and a broken heart and a contrite spirit to get the job done from Heaven.  We must be brought down before we can be risen up.

King David says in the 116th Psalm, “I was brought low and He helped me.”  Then, with the weight of those sins rising up in your soul just like that dross rising to the top in that gold being purified, you seek Jesus and Him only can forgive your sins.  He has paid the price of your sin when He died on a cross at Calvary as our substitute.  True God called people will seek repentance when they are brought low to Christ.  The last thing Jesus mentions to the Laodicean Church is to repent.

I remember when God saved me back on January 10th, 1971.  Wow, that was a long time ago, but I’ve never forgotten that day and I’ve never been lost again since that day either.  He’s more precious to my soul today as He has ever been.  We must live sanctified or clean lives every moment of every day if we are true Christians.  Now, you know that’s impossible, but He said He’d be with us and never leave us or forsake us.  He said that if we sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.  Isn’t that something?  Even if you fail while trying to live right, He’s your go-between to the Father to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  You can tell a true Christian by the way they dress, by their language, by that Spirit living down within them that seems to glow.  They just have a loving, giving, and forgiving spirit about them that just says, “I’m one of His little children and He’s coming to get me one day soon.”

The masses are flocking to the big churches, and living just like the world lives.  Actually, the time has come that you can’t tell the church from the world.  They are very busy with activities to “bring in the masses” into the church.  Would it surprise you to know that Jesus never was in the numbers business?  Oh, He has had some on occasions, but the Bible tells us clearly that they came to be fed of the loaves and fishes.  They weren’t there to hear the Word.  You can clearly see where their heart is and that they did not really believe the gospel in John 6:64 – 68 Jesus says, “But there are some of you that believe not.  For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.  And He said, therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.  From that time many of His disciples (the big crowds) went back, and walked no more with him.  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away?  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?  Thou hast the Words of eternal life.”

The visible church is looking and acting so much like the world today that the world is losing respect for the True Church because so many that claim to be Christians are so worldly.  Lost people in the world aren’t stupid.  They can tell that you are what you do and not what you say you do.

When people all over this land and other countries as well claim to be Christians, but their lifestyles don’t show it, they need to do what the Bible says to do in 2 Peter 1:10, “Wherefore the rather brethren give diligence to make your calling and election sure…”  When young girls are sexually active and see no harm in it; when young men get young ladies pregnant and take no responsibility for it; when parents give birth control and condoms to their high school children, it sends a signal to them that it’s alright with Mother and Daddy and we don’t care what you do.  When parents of high school children allow them to go on a senior cruise with the class, there’s something wrong in the churches in America.  When parents allow their children to drink intoxicants or to smoke weed at home, there’s something dreadfully wrong in the churches in America.  No wonder Jesus said he would spue us out of His mouth.

We that call ourselves Christians don’t measure up to the mark of a follower of Christ.  There is no clean living in our lifestyles, there’s no keeping your body chaste and avoiding fornication.  There’s no worship, no preaching, no conviction of sin, no Holy Spirit in your church, guess what kind of church you are?  Yes, you are a member of the Church of Laodicea, and unless you take the advice of the Savior, you will spend eternity cast into outer darkness.  Now, I don’t know what that means, but Jesus said there would be weeping, and wailing and gnashing of teeth and it lasts for all eternity.

In closing (yea!) let me say that it’s time we stopped playing church and began to get on our knees and seek the Savior; it’s time to get into the proper Word of God; it’s time to turn from your worldly ways and seek the only one who can save you.  Turn to Jesus.  He’s coming soon!
